What’s stopping you?

Sometimes the most intelligent people have great ideas but fail to execute, why is that? Sound familiar? You might be that person that sits at home and constantly thinks of better ways of doing things and wondering why things are not done like this, and think wow I could make a business out of this! You hum and you haw and eventually you over think it and before you know it, that epic idea has gone in the overflowing brain bin of great ideas that will never come to fruition….but wait, what if you didn’t think of all the noise, the might be risks, the late tax filing, the admin, the tax you’d pay on the income, what if this, what if that?!

Not long ago I sat down for a drink with a cereal “start up’er” who was very refreshing in his assessment of how you should go about setting up a business when you have a good idea and potentially why smart people fail over and over again- they lose focus on the idea and start to focus on the problems, and rightly so they might identify legitimate problems that could happen, but which in reality, would be completely negligible to the business idea. He smiles to me and says, ‘sometimes being too smart is bad for you’. Remember, identifying the risk is one thing, but that risk actually materializing in a meaningful way is another. And even if it does happen the quantum is a sliding scale, and realistically, its probably not material in the slightest.

So, next time you think of setting up a business, but end up thinking about the problems, channel the old adage of a named brand you might recognize and “just do it”. Deliver, execute and figure out the problems later, after all there are professionals who’s literal job it is manage these so called “problems” ! :-)

Get the sales first and worry about the rest later- tax on profits is still more money than tax on nothing.
